This Is Our God

“It will be said on that day, ‘Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us. This is the LORD; we have waited for him; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation'” (Isaiah 25:9).

One of Isaiah’s favorite themes is the time when God will finally bring unending blessings to the world, when at long last all the promises He has made for thousands of years will culminate in His blessed reign on the earth. After Isaiah foretells the destruction of the whole earth, he suddenly bursts into praise of what God will do after that destruction. “On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food,” he proclaims. “He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken” (vv. 6, 8). The destruction that comes as a result of God’s judgment will not last forever. One day, He Himself will restore what has been broken. He will personally wipe away the tears of His people, and He will Himself destroy death.

How beautiful it is to wait on God, knowing that this is what He has planned for us when all is finally completed! We have waited for Him, that He might save us (v. 9). We know that His judgment is always for the purpose of purifying us, to make us more like Himself. We know that one day, all sin will be gone, and there will be no more death. We can rejoice even in the hardships, because He has saved us. Now we wait to see the fulfillment of His promise. We wait for the day when we will see our Savior face-to-face as He sits enthroned over all the earth.
