Victory

“When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: ‘Death is swallowed up in victory.’ ‘O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?’ The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” –1 Corinthians 15:54-57

Death is the great tragedy of mankind. It entered the world when Adam and Eve rebelled against God, and it is the curse that haunts us even today. Every generation has tried some new way to defeat it. But all our best efforts have served only to put it off a little longer. Death comes for all one day, and with it comes unfathomable grief.

But praise God, for in Him we have hope. We who believe that Christ Himself died and came back to life do not grieve without hope. We mourn for the loss of one whom we will never see again on this earth, but at the same time we rejoice, for the one whom we love is now forever in the presence of perfect love.

Death is horrible. We mortal beings who are so tied to what we can see rage against this seemingly omnipotent force that can snatch at a whim those who are dearest to us. But there is one who is more powerful yet. God Almighty, the great giver of life, has turned even death into the greatest victory.

For when Christ defeated sin, He defeated death itself. Death no longer has the power of fear over us who have believed in Christ and received His own life. For us, death is falling asleep and waking up at last to the life we were created for—a life where every moment is spent face-to-face with the one who made us, who loves us, who gave His own life so that we could be with Him forever.

We can rejoice in the God who makes everything sad come untrue.
