Well that was amazing.
I was intrigued by this story from the beginning with its premise of a girl with fiery blood forced to work alongside a ranger sworn to wipe out her race. And it did not disappoint. From page one, I was completely invested in Iya and Malcolm's story. It was such a great read!
Characters: I loved Iya! She's so sweet and gentle, with so much trauma in her young life. Her choice to cling to faith despite it all is inspiring. It was quite enjoyable to go on a journey with her.
Malcolm is a really good character. I liked him even better than Iya. While I sometimes wanted to smack him for his prejudices, I still understood why he felt as he did, so I couldn't be too mad at him. His arc is great!
Content: There's some violence, but nothing's gratuitous. People are injured and die in painful ways. A character is nearly burned to death. There's intense hatred between humans and Emberlings, which can be difficult to read about.
There's a sweet romance throughout. It's quite clean, with just a couple of kisses. I was definitely rooting for it all the way through.
Writing: The writing was amazing. I was sucked into the plot from that incredible first line, and I didn't want to stop until the end. There are some complex elements going on at the same time, but it all comes together so well.
Summary: This is one of my favorite books of the year. I expected to like it, but I didn't expect to love it as much as I did. I can't wait for book two! I'd recommend this book to readers aged 14+.
